Violinists and Independent Learning

Violin performance is a sphere of activity that involves independent learning to a degree like no other.

The mastery of violin performance, for example, requires hours of isolated, individual practice in which the student or violinist will have, independently, administer and regulate play and practice entirely and essentially on one’s own.

It is here, particularly, that both the concept as well as what practices pertain to ‘independent learning’ might come especially helpful, and in psychologically valid terms.

Independent Learning in Educational Psychology

In educational psychology, ‘independent learning’ refers both to the task of learning on one’s own, as well as what would encourage it, including the encouragement of self-regulating behavior, and other forms of activity awareness, all of which would be useful to implement in the lives of violinists seeking to improve at their work.

Awareness and Ownership

What is here critical is a sense that the violinist is aware of how much in control they are, and further that they are able to center their learning and progress on these terms, especially through a ‘sense of ownership of their learning’, as the editors of The Oxford Dictionary of Education have written.

If is through both the awareness of independent learning as well as what awareness independent learning brings, and in combination with the skills to tailor and regulate this independence, that success in independent learning emerges.
